Writing
Welcome to my writing section! Writing is a crucial skill in the business world, allowing for clear and effective communication at all levels. This section of my Professional Online Portfolio features my Resume, Email Draft, Cover Letter Draft, and professional emails I have sent, selected to highlight my growth throughout the semester.
Reflection
I believed my writing skills were strong, but this class revealed areas for improvement. Through assignments, I gained confidence and significantly enhanced my abilities. The Cover Letter Draft was especially valuable, teaching me proper formatting and structure as I prepare for internships and jobs. Developing these skills is essential not only for securing opportunities but also for succeeding long-term in the professional world.
Resume
Using Quinncia, I revised my resume to highlight my academic achievements, work experience, and relevant skills. I also learned the importance of incorporating numeric values to better demonstrate the impact of my work.
Email Draft Assignment
This assignment helped me learn how to clearly communicate my point in an email, structure it professionally, and conduct research to provide a well-informed suggestion to my boss.
Cover Letter Draft Assignment
At the start of the semester, I had little knowledge of cover letters, but reading Kate Palmquist’s article on Indeed gave me a strong foundation in their purpose and structure. I learned proper formatting, common mistakes to avoid, and practical tips like placing contact information at the top. Revising Brandon’s cover letter reinforced these lessons, showing me the impact of irrelevant details, incorrect tone, and errors. This experience greatly improved my ability to organize my thoughts and write clear, concise, and professional cover letters, preparing me for internships and job applications.
Emails
This class has helped me write professional emails to address important academic inquiries. For example, I’ve contacted JSOM advising and one of my professors about topics such as degree planning and missing grades.
