Oral and Visual Communication

Welcome to my Oral and Visual Communication section! Oral communication is essential in both business and everyday life, and this semester I’ve made significant progress. Experiences like the Finance Career Fair and my presentation on AI in education helped me build confidence, reduce pauses and filler words, and adapt smoothly when I lose my place, clearly showing how much I’ve grown since the start of the semester.

Reflection

I also focused on improving my nonverbal communication by maintaining eye contact, using open posture, and projecting approachability, which made interactions feel more natural and engaging. Skills that once felt intimidating have now become opportunities to connect, and I know these improvements will be especially valuable as I prepare for a career as a Financial Advisor, where delivering clear and confident presentations is essential.

Finance Career Fair

Before attending the Finance Career Fair, I felt overwhelmed at the JSOM Career Fair by the busy environment and the large number of skilled students. By the time of the Finance Career Fair, I had a clearer understanding of how to present myself professionally and communicate effectively. I came prepared with thoughtful questions, projected my voice, and felt more confident connecting with recruiters.

Sharing my updated resume and engaging with professionals allowed me to practice networking and interviewing in a real-world setting. While I could have challenged myself further by speaking with more employers, I’m proud of stepping outside my comfort zone. Overall, the experience boosted my confidence, improved my professional communication, and highlighted areas for growth that I will carry into future career events.

Presentation

I knew presenting would be challenging due to my fear of public speaking, and coordinating schedules among five busy students added to the difficulty. Despite these hurdles, I appreciated how supportive and accommodating my teammates were, which made the project much more manageable.

One key lesson I learned is the importance of practice for group presentations; additional rehearsals could have refined our timing and delivery. Personally, the project provided valuable experience presenting to a large audience, helping me gain confidence, improve my speaking abilities, and understand the importance of projecting confidence even when I don’t fully feel it.
